Flow Meter Calibration System

Imagine you’re at a gas station, filling up your car’s tank. The numbers on the pump display the amount of fuel you’re getting. As a consumer, if we are paying for a specific amount of fuel at the gas station, then we are entitled to receive the corresponding quantity. If the measuring device is inaccurate, we may not get our money’s worth. Flow meter calibration ensures these numbers are precisely accurate. This way, you only pay for the exact amount of gas you receive.

What is a Flow Meter Calibration System?
A Flow Meter Calibration System is a specialized tool that ensures flow meters provide accurate measurements of fluid flow rates. It verifies that flow meters are precise in quantifying how much liquid passes through the pipes. The process of flow meter calibration system and its components are given below.

A flow meter calibration system roughly comprises of these modules:

  1. Reference Flow Meters
  2. Reservoir or Storage tanks
  3. Stainless Steel Piping
  4. Test meters
  5. Valves
  6. Reducer/Expander
  7. Control Panel (For Automatic Systems)
  8. Collection Tanks & Weighing Scales (For Gravimetric System)

How Does it Work?
  1. Selection: The method of calibration is chosen based on the type of test meter to be calibrated. If the test meter has a higher accuracy than that of the reference meter, then the Gravimetric method of calibration is chosen. This method uses high precision and accurate weighing scales to accurately measure the amount of water collected and is then used to compare with the test meter. If the test meter has a similar or poorer accuracy than that of the reference meter, then we use a Master meter or Reference Meter method of calibration and directly compare the amount of water passed through the test meter and the reference meter.
  2. Controlled Flow: Using the reference meter and VFD to control the pumps, we can control the rate of flow of water through the pipes by checking the value on the reference flow meter.
  3. Comparison: The meter’s reading is checked against the actual amount of liquid that passed through the master device. For comparison method, the master is the reference flow meter. For Gravimetric method, the master is the weighing scales.
  4. Adjustment: If the meter isn’t accurate, it’s adjusted to ensure it measures correctly and the process is repeated. The adjustment of the meter is through setting a factor called the “k-factor” and this value should not be changed between calibrations as it affects the value and accuracy.
